The East Khasi Hills District
Cooperative Milk Union Ltd., Shillong was established on the 15th September 2009 and registered as SHILL/25 of 2009 dated 15th September 2009 under Section II of the Meghalaya Cooperative Societies Act (Assam Act I of 1950 as adapted by Meghalaya) with its area of operation within East Khasi Hills District. All milk procurement and marketing in the district is being made through the Union.
It started functioning as a business module on 1st
September 2017.
The formation of the Union was form based on the
Anand Model (AMUL Model) with the Dairy Cooperative Societies being the primary
village level organisation comprising of Dairy Farmers who federated to form a
District Milk Union.
The main role of the Union is to look into the welfare of the Dairy Farmers by making Dairying a sustainable source of income. The Union take the role of procuring the excess milk produced by the Dairy Farmers which otherwise would have gone wasted, process and market the milk and milk products thereby preventing the Dairy farmers from being exploited by the middlemen.
The Union is also currently a member of the INDIAN DAIRY ASSOCIATION.

Meghalaya is located in the North-Eastern part
of India bounded by the state of Assam from the north and east and by
Bangladesh from the South. The State has a total area of 22,429 sq. Km with
a population of 2,964,007 lakhs (2011
Census) and a density of population with 130/km2.
The State is divided into eleven districts namely: (i)
East Khasi Hills (ii) Ri Bhoi (iii) West Khasi Hills (iv) South West Khasi
Hills (v) East Jaintia Hills (vi)West Jaintia Hills (vii) North Garo Hills
(viii) East Garo Hills (ix) West Garo Hills, (x) South West Garo Hills and (xi)
South Garo Hills.
NPDD: Under the National Programme
for Dairy Development scheme, assistance is received for upgrading the
processing capacity of dairy plant from 10 TLPD to 50 TLPD. Also, the project envisages improving
procurement facilities by installing bulk milk coolers with electronic testing
equipment at milk collection centres and providing transport vehicles for
transporting milk from collection centres to main dairy plant. The project aims to provide assistance to the
existing 14 DCS in the project area and formation of new DCS through which
total DCS network will reach to 21 in East Khasi Hills during the project
period.
Meghalaya Milk Mission: The Mission aims at taking the state to a new level by integrating the AMUL model and the community approach. Initially, the Mission will be to assist the present Dairy farmers in increasing their Milk Production and parallelly, encouraging the new farmers in the development of Community Farming based Dairy Cooperative Society and development of Community Ranches. Development of modern infrastructure for Community Farms/Ranches for Breeding, Feed and Fodder, milk production, procurement, processing and cost effective marketing strategy will be done by the Union. The State Level Dairy Development Agency will develop an efficient system for capacity building, monitoring and evaluation, with the objective of achieving genetic up-gradation of the Indigenous breeds. The proposed scheme is to be implemented in East Khasi Hills District, Ri-bhoi District, Jaintia Hills, West and East Garo Hills District with a total financial outlay of ₹21,548.27 lakhs over a period of 4 years(2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21& 2021-22) by extending the assistance to the traditional farmers community. Later, the scheme will also be implemented in other districts as well.

The Union currently outsources the Services of Home Delivery to The TYNRAI MULTIPURPOSE COOPERATIVE SOCIETY LTD. It is a cooperative society registered with the Cooperation Department of the Government of Meghalaya under the Meghalaya Cooperative Societies Act 2015 bearing registration no. SHILL-2 of 2019-20. Its Outlet is situated at Pynthorbah and it is currently catering to the main parts of Shillong City.
Na Ri Essentials are the Retail Outlets of Na Ri Milk and Milk Products currently located at different areas of the East Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi District of Meghalaya.

ISO 22000:2018 is a Food Safety
Management System which involve policies, procedures, controls and
documentation that ensures the food sold by a business is safe to eat and free
from contaminants.
ISO 22000:2018 can contribute to
the quality of life in general by more efficient and dynamic food safety hazard
controls safe food, systematic management of prerequisite programmes, increased
potential for economic growth and development, better quality and safer jobs in
the food industry and efficient validation and documentation of techniques,
method and procedures.
Therefore, it’s a proud moment for
the East Khasi Hills District Cooperative Milk Union Ltd, Shillong, (Na Ri) and
for the State on its 50th Year of Statehood to be the first Dairy
Plant in the State to be ISO 22000:2018 certified.
